Dockside is CottageLife.com’s weekly newsletter
Branding | Hand-Lettering | UX
In Fall of 2018, CottageLife.com wanted to re-imagine their weekly newsletter. I was tasked with designing the logo and refreshing the design of the newsletter template.
REFRESHING THE BRAND
Iconic Canadian brand Cottage Life wanted to refresh the look of their beloved Dockside newsletter by developing the newsletter into a stand alone product. They wanted a logo that would both compliment that of Cottage Life, yet be recognizable enough to exist on its own.
Two main treatments for the logo were explored. One brush script style and a second custom sans serif. Both versions incorporated elements of cottage iconography that subtly tied the brand to the logotype.
In addition to bringing users to CottageLife.com, one of the key objectives of the redesign was to bridge the gap between the Cottage Life Magazine and the website by giving the newsletter a cleaner, a more editorial feeling. A huge part of this was making the content feel fresh week to week as well as accommodate a wide variety of image types from stock photography to high quality images. As a result the design is modular, utilizing different content blocks that can be turned on and off based on the needs of the editorial staff.
Another key objective of the redesign was to better leverage Dockside’s highly engaged subscriber base of 60k. While the newsletter historically contained bix box ads, Cottage Life felt the newsletter could add additional value to advertisers through linking to co-branded sponsorships on the website. The result was that In addition to the standard newsletter template two additional newsletter configurations were put together using that allowed the brand to charge a premium.
